The AK-47 is a remarkable piece of machinery, isn't it? I own a few myself, mainly because it's hard for me to pass up picking one of the work horses up when I see one at a decent price. What makes these rifles so great lies in the fact that you have to bury one in sand for two years and then beat it against a tree to get it to stop functioning. Even though the AK-47 will continue to fire under adverse conditions, that doesn't mean you can ignore the poor thing. It's time to break out supplies and clean your AK-47!
The first thing is always being safe when you work on your rifle. This is a dangerous weapon, and it needs to be treated with appropriate respect. Discharge the magazine and check the chamber physically and visually for any presence of a live round. Now that your safety is ensured, it is time to field strip your AK-47. If you don't know how to do this, there are plenty of guides on the Internet like this one. Also, you should be ashamed of yourself.
The initial cleaning process is only slightly time consuming. You can use any number of solvents, even kerosene if you feel like a real cheap skate. Use wet patches down the bore and along the disassembled bolt carrier group to knock out any built up carbon deposits and to get the large areas free of fouling and residue. Toothbrushes work really well for this, and brass brushes are especially recommended for the crevices of the bolt carrier group.
Brake cleaner has some pretty gnarly health risks, so make sure you are wearing gloves and eye wear for this next step. Using your brake cleaner, spray down the parts you just finished cleaning to get rid of anything you may have missed, as well as any cleaner that may still be on the surfaces of the bore and chamber. This will get rid of nearly all of the grease, leaving you a nice metal finish.
You need three lubricants for this next step: motor oil, machine oil, and grease. Use the grease for all of the parts of the AK-47 that grind against one another when firing. Use the machine oil to coat all of the interior parts of the gun, and use the motor oil to thinly coat all of the exterior parts of the rifle. This will protect your AK-47 against rust and wear very effectively.
If you are in a real rush, you can always field strip your AK-47 and take it to the local car wash. Use the pressure washer to hose it out really thoroughly, stick the whole thing on your antennae on the drive home to dry, and then dip it in a bucket of motor oil for storage. This seriously works. It works because the AK is an indestructible engine of efficiency and that's why you love it.
